Tom is a broadly trained geographer and social scientist whose scholarship critically analyzes human-environment centered phenomena, policies and practices shaped by contemporary energy transitions. His work is driven by a strong desire to help craft solutions for some of the worlds most pressing challenges linked to energy development, demand and use. Some of these challenges include—but are not limited to—access and exploitation of human and biophysical resources, food, water and energy security, disturbances and hazards shaped by human-induced climate change and impacts on marginalized communities. Through his scholarship and teaching he hopes to make positive impacts by advancing critical and analytical thinking, developing solutions and consequently helping to shape the world into a more equitable, peaceful, less degraded and more sustainable place for all inhabitants.
